:: BWPDA ::

The BWPDA - The British Wood Preserving and Damp-proofing Association is the largest of its kind in Europe. The BWPDA is at the forefront of developments in these areas, and deals with all the relevant government departments. It is a nationally recognised authority on timber and damp problems. Members include:

  • Manufacturers and distributors of preservatives and damp control products
  • Manufacturers and distributors of flame retardants and timber treatment plants
  • Producers and users of treated timber and specialists in remedial timber treatment and damp proofing
  • Universities, colleges, learned societies and research organisations in the UK and worldwide
  • Independent consultants and private members

For over the past 71 years, the BWPDA has set the standards for timber treatment and damp proofing companies operating in the UK and overseas. Much more than basic ability is required when joining the BWPDA. Contractors must satisfy not only stringent tests on their skills, methodology and knowledge of safety and environmental legislation, but also on financial soundness. Contractors must work to an OFT approved Code of Practise, and are regularly asked to demonstrate these standards are being maintained. In the event of complaint arising, the association operates an Arbitration Scheme.

It is strongly recommended that a BWPDA member is used when choosing a reliable contractor among the many that are advertising. To be in the BWPDA, unlike most trade bodies, it is not just a matter of paying a subscription, members have to meet strict criteria for employment and qualified staff, trading history, customer service and health, safety and environment protection. This involves a detailed application and an inspection by BWPDA technical staff at least once a month, and following admission, an on-going regime of inspections for management procedures and workmanship standards.
